New Root-Crawler on-line
May 11, 2003 - NewRoot is pleased to announce its
support of the TapRoot Committee. TapRoot is a critical infrastructure project of the Top Level Domain Association which will maintain and publish Inclusive Name Space zone
maps. The project is designed to co-ordinate the expansion of the domain name system outside the U.S. government root system.
Joe Baptista one of the Internets first cartographers and the projects director is excited with the projects potential to also address Internet
security issues. "These resources provide significant benefits to the
Internet community", said Baptista "not only will we be the first to
map he Internet naming system but we'll also be in a position to fix various security issues related to the DNS". Baptista's past research was
nstrumental in fixing numerous vulnerabilities in the U.S. military domain name system.
The projects first goal will be to scan over 700,000 Internet domain name servers for non U.S. government root systems. "Once the root systems
are identified we will then proceed to scan those roots for top level domain zones" said Baptista.
Seed data for the project has been provided by U.S. Department of Commerce and Planet Communications and Computing Facility (PCCF) a not
for profit Internet research facility. Volunteer software developers in Peterborough Canada will telecommute to TapRoot facilities sponsored by
NewRoot at the secure facility 'CyberBunker' in the Netherlands. (www.cyberbunker.com)
